Human Rights Across Canada

Human rights across Canada differ by province and territory in the areas they cover (such as housing, employment, or services), and the grounds they protect (like race, gender, disability, or religion). While federal human rights laws, like the Canadian Human Rights Act, apply to federally regulated industries, each province and territory has its own human rights legislation addressing local needs and priorities. This creates variation in how discrimination is defined and enforced, reflecting Canada’s diversity while also presenting challenges in ensuring consistent protection nationwide. Check out each of the territories and provinces regulations as well as our national laws.

United Nations Universal Periodic Review

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a unique mechanism of the Human Rights Council that calls for each UN Member State to undergo a peer review of its human rights records every 4.5 years.

Human Rights Watch Canada

Human Rights Watch is one of the world’s leading independent organizations dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world.

  • Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities

    Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities

Currently there are 121 municipalities across Canada that are signatories to the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities. This national initiative is sponsored by the Canadian Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and is part of an international movement: International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities.

Canada’s Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities works towards:

    • improving their practices to promote social inclusion,

    • establishing policies to eradicate all forms of racism and discrimination, and

    • promoting human rights and diversity.

Councils must pass a motion to join. Click here for more information about joining the Coalition.

  • Compassionate Communities

A Compassionate Community is a community that actively embraces the principles of compassion as outlined in the Charter for Compassion, making them a guiding force in its policies, programs, and daily interactions. Rooted in the Golden Rule—to treat others as one would like to be treated—the Charter for Compassion calls on individuals, organizations, and governments to foster empathy, equity, and justice.

  • Welcoming and Inclusive Communities

Welcoming and Inclusive Communities is an advocacy initiative of Alberta Municipalities.

A welcoming and inclusive community works towards being free from discrimination, allowing all residents to fully participate in social, political, cultural, and economic life. Municipal governments, being closely connected to residents, are well-positioned to create policies, programs, and strategies that celebrate diversity and actively work to eliminate racism and discrimination.

The Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Toolkit offers a comprehensive framework to support communities in fostering inclusivity. It outlines key steps such as identifying challenges, building commitment, developing a vision, creating strategic plans, assigning responsibilities, and celebrating achievements. The toolkit also features detailed guidance, real-world case studies, and best practices from communities across the province.
